soap history

all my children: the histories 1-8

What follows is a history of the soap opera All My Children from the beginning to around 1993.

Please note these are not my words. I fixed a few typos and abbreviated folk’s last names. This is a 2023 repost of a 2003 repost on rec.arts.tv.soaps.abc and the original post dates back to 1993.

I found the following post of 9/16/93 by Sebastien L.from a collection by Genevieve M. (parts 1-6), Karin C. (part 7) and Margaret G. (part 8). It will answer a LOT of questions about the history of the show until 1993. – Robin C.

———————START OF POST —————————–

Hi everyone, I have managed to tear myself from my work AGAIN! 🙂 So I’m posting the AMC History parts 1 through 8 in one enormous post (ie, the whole thing). Enjoy!

Part 1

In the beginning, the storyline of Phil, Tara and Chuck kept fans in suspense. Phil and Tara were high school sweethearts: Tara, the daughter of widower, Dr. Joe Martin, and Phil, the son of Ruth and Ted Brent. They would often do their homework together and dream of their future life as man and wife.

But Erica Kane, beautiful and spoiled, had her own designs on Philip. One day, she accidentally overheard a conversation that Phil was really the son of Amy Tyler, the product of her affair with Nick Davis, and had been adopted at birth by Ted and Ruth. Armed with this information Erica told Phil, and he confronted his parents, who confirmed it.

Phil could not believe it. Upset, disheartened and feeling cheated, he fled the house. His father followed and was killed in a car crash. Feeling guilty, Phil went to New-York. There he found a job, had an accident and developed amnesia.

After patiently waiting to hear from Phil, Tara began to feel he had deserted her. Chuck, Phil’s best friend, was there to help comfort her. Chuck had long been attracted to Tara, but had kept his distance. Tara came to lean on Chuck and was grateful for his understanding.

A friend of Phil’s from work decided it was time his parents knew where he was and went to PV to tell them. Nick decided to visit Phil. He was distressed to find him an amnesia victim, and upset that Phil could not remember Tara, although he did recall portions of his past. Nick’s visit brought him in contact with the lovely Anne Tyler.

Giving up all hope of the future with Phil, Tara accepted Chuck’s marriage proposal. On the day of the wedding, Nick, who had been drinking and was so distraught at the thought of Chuck marrying the woman his son was in love with, punched Chuck. As the wedding progressed, chuck collapsed and was taken to the hospital. It was then that he learned that he had a defective kidney. The marriage was postponed.

In the meantime, Nick had persuaded Phil to return to PV. Once there, Phil and Tara fell in love, again. But Tara did not want to upset Chuck while he was in the hospital by telling him she was involved with Philip. But, as time progressed and Chuck remained too ill to marry, Phil received his draft notice. Desperate, he and Tara searched for a minister to marry them on his last night in PV. Unable to find one, they married themselves in a deserted chapel. After one night together. Phil left for Vietnam, leaving Tara, both unaware that she was pregnant.

Because of the immediate attraction Nick and Anne felt for each other in New-York, Anne returned to PV to be with him. They soon fell in love, although they were complete opposites: Anne was from the wealthy Tyler family and Nick was from the wrong side of the tracks.

They were quietly married, much to the disapproval of Phoebe, Anne’s mother, who considered Nick below Anne’s social stature and not proper son-in-law material.

Anne and Nick lived in a small apartment and Anne opened her boutique. Nick lost a lot of money in bad business deals, but Anne constantly fed his ego and tried to build his confidence. More than anything else, Anne wanted a baby. Nick agreed to this, deciding it was the least he could give her.

But when Anne was unable to conceive, Nick secretly saw a doctor in another town for tests. When he was told he had a low sperm count and it would be difficult for him to father a child, Nick reacted as if he had been told he was sterile.

Because he was a failure in business and couldn’t financially support Anne in the manner to with she was used to, Nick felt she would be better off without him. He faked fights with her. Anne could not understand his behavior and soon found him impossible to live with. They separated.

In one final attempt to save her marriage, Anne seduces Nick, but he was determined not to ruin her life.

Anne became pregnant from that one night, but since she was unaware that Nick had left her because he thought he’d never be able to give her a child, she refused to tell him, fearing he would stay with her out of responsibility.

Part 2

Nick, lonely and desperate, turned to a young dance instructor in his studio, Kitty Shea. They had an affair and Kitty became pregnant.

Anne confided her dilemma to her longtime friend, Paul Martin. Paul told her he had long loved her and proposed, saying they’d raise the child as their own. But Anne had a miscarriage and she and Nick divorced.

Feeling lonely and hoping to learn to eventually love Paul, Anne married him. After they were settled in their new home, Nick discovered Anne had been pregnant. He confessed to her why he had really left and that he still loved her.

Anne was furious at first, but unable to deny her love for Nick, she decided to divorce Paul. Kitty told Anne she was pregnant by Nick. Anne insisted Nick marry Kitty. He did, but shortly after their marriage, Kitty had a miscarriage. Unable to accept the loss of their baby, Nick decided to stay with Kitty until her emotional state of mind returned.

Ruth and Joe Martin had known each other a long time, as they both worked in the hospital. A close relationship developed when Ruth was widowed, since Joe could sympathize with her, being a widower himself. Eventually their friendship turned to love and they married.

Realizing she couldn’t have Phil, Erica turned to attractive young med student, Jeff Martin. They met at the hospital where Erica worked as a volunteer. Jeff immediately fell for Erica. She wanted to be in
love so desperately that she convinced herself that Jeff was the man for her. She persuaded Jeff to transfer and apply for residency at PV hospital.

Jeff wanted to delay their marriage until he was financially more stable, but Erica was very persuasive, and they married.

Not prepared for marriage, Erica found herself the lonely life of a hospital intern. Then she became pregnant. Jeff was ecstatic at the thought, but Erica didn’t want the baby. Without telling him, Erica had an abortion. Due to complications afterwards, Erica ended up in the hospital. Her doctor notified Jeff, who was extremely angry at what she had done.

When Jeff confronted her, Erica had psychologically blocked the abortion from her mind and denied it to Jeff. A hospital psychiatrist, Dr. Polk, helped Erica recall the incident. Jeff felt his wife needed his support, so when she begged his forgiveness and promised to be a good wife, he agreed to forgive and forget.

To fill up her time, Erica got a job at Anne’s Boutique. On a buying trip to New-York, she met Jason Maxwell, head of a modeling agency. he offered her a career in modeling. Thinking it would entail glamour, she agreed. But since it meant Erica would have to divide her time between New-York and PV, Jeff was upset. He wanted a full-time wife.

[Picture of Nick (larry Keith) and Phoebe (Ruth Warrick) in 1971]

Becoming more and more upset by her modeling, Jeff found a comforting ear in Nurse Mary Kennicott. Jeff learned Mary was just what he wanted and, with Erica living the high life in New-York, he asked for a divorce. At first Erica refused, but, later decided she would go along with Jeff, (since Jason led her to believe her loved her), only if Jeff would agree to certain conditions for a magazine article before filing. Jeff agreed, and when he knew he would eventually be free of Erica, asked Mary to wait for him.

With Phil missing in Vietnam, Tara explained her predicament to Chuck. Chuck gallantly told Tara he would marry her and raise Phil’s child as his own. They slipped away and eloped. Because they were afraid someone might suspect the child might be Phil’s, they told their friends they had eloped earlier, but because Phil was missing, they didn’t want to have a big wedding. Tara grew to deeply care for Chuck. He was good to her, and when the child was born, they named him Philip. They became the ideal couple.

When Jason Maxwell was found dead, suspicion turned to Jeff. The police fouldn’t believe he was not the jealous husband who didn’t want to lose his wife, especially when Erica denied that Jason has promised her marriage. Margo Flax, Jason’s ex-wife, had told Erica that Jason’s plans with her were phony, and Erica tried to make the authorities believe she was happily married.

Mona Kane, Erica’s mother, couldn’t remeber what happened the night Jason was killed. Dr. Polk and Charles Tyler decide to give her Sodium Pentothal to jog her memory. Under the influence of truth serum, Mona recalled accidentally killing Jason. This put an end to an arduous trial.

Cleared of murder, Jeff and Erica were divorced quietly. Jeff then married Mary. There were very happy and life together proved to be all they had hoped for.

Philip miraculously returned from Vietnam, believing Tara was still waiting for him. When Ruth learned of Phil’s return, she was immediately happy and distressed. Ruth had learned the facts about little Philip, and was torn between telling her son the truth and letting the past lie.

Phil was crushed when he learned Tara and Chuck had married and had a child. And Tara was torn between her love for Phil and devotion to Chuck and her son.

Finally, giving up on a chance with Tara, Phil found a friend in lonely Erica Martin. Erica seduced him and found herself pregnant, again. She realised that Phil didn’t love her and decided to have another abortion. Learning what she was planning, Phil went after her and told her he wanted to marry her. Erica was thrilled. Phil felt he would have a chance at hapiness like everyone else. They bought a house and planned to settle down.

Complications arose, though, and during an illness, Erica lost the baby. Unable to accept this, Phil arranged for her to have psychiatric care.

[Picture of the entire cast for 1000th episode in 1973 and picture of Jeff Martin (Charles Frank) and Mary Martin (Susan Blanchard) in 1973]

Phil came to love little Philip. Eventually he put the pieces together, and confronted his mother with the fact that the boy was actually his child, not Chuck’s. Ruth admitted the truth but begged Phil not to let anyone else know that he knew.

It was too much to ask. While Chuck was away on a business trip, Phil confronted Tara with the truth, and their love for each other, which had never died, was reborn. They spent the night together and planned to tell Chuck the truth when he returned. But as fate would have it, his kidney problem returned and he became seriously ill. Tara couldn’t tell him the truth about her love for Phil while he was so ill, so she begged Phil for time.

Part 3

Anne tried desperately to make her marriage to Paul work. When Kitty finally realized she was not pregnant, and that she was fooling herself with Nick, Nick wanted to turn to Anne. Nick approached Anne about getting back together. She needed time to think and decided to take a trip to New-York. Paul was certain Anne would stay with him, but Nick decided to follow her. She was surprised to find him tagging along, but they had a delightful time. During their drive home, Anne told Nick that she wouldn’t leave Paul. NIck, so shocked by the news, took his eyes off the icy road for a second, and they had an accident.

Paul misunderstood the circumstances surrounding the affair, and decided to give Anne her freedom. But Anne slipped out of the hospital and disappeared.

Margo decided Paul was fair game and began pursuing him. She even had her face lifted to make herself look younger and more attractive. Paul fell for her on the rebound.

Upon Anne’s return to PV, Paul told her they were to be divorced. Anne accepted this, though her mother was very upset. Paul and Margo were married.

Jeff and Mary were eargerly awaiting the birth of their first child, when Mary was killed, shot by two intruders in their house. Jeff was so distraught, he left town.

When Anne returned, her brother, Linc returned with her. Linc met and fell for Kitty. Phoebe felt her son was making the wrong choice, as Anne had, and was determined to make sure that there would be no wedding. She tried to get Claudette Montgomery, Margo’s daughter, to take Linc away from Kitty. But Linc and Kitty married and Phoebe, so distraught, fainted, causing a scene at the reception.

Margo, vowing not to lose Paul, and realizing he was still in love with Anne decided to try to become pregnant. But she was too late, Paul had persuaded Anne to accompany him on a trip, promising to get a divorce. Anne agreed and she was the one who became pregnant!

Margo told Paul that she was pregnant (even though she wasn’t), hoping to make the statement true in the near future. When her hopes were dashed, she arranged to adopt a newborn child, and claim it was theirs when the time was right.

Anne, learning of Margo’s pregnancy, refused to wait for Paul and turned to Nick. Nick was prepared to raise the child as his own. Anne backed out, realizing lies only caused more trouble. Paul finally learned the truth about Anne’s preganacy, having thought the child really was Nick’s.

Happiness seemed fleeting for Kitty. Her first husband, Hal Short, arrived in town (his real name was Al Shea). He asked Kitty to keep his identity a secret, so he could start a new life.

Everything seemed to go smoothly, until Hal was found by his past associates, who were involved with drugs. He was forced to deal drugs again. The syndicate devised a scheme which included using the boutique and Kitty as a drug drop off. Eventually Kitty learned why Hal bought so much of a special soap. When she refused to be used any longer, the syndicate told her that they would divulge the fact that her first divorce had never become final. Hal asked Kitty to be patient.

But when Claudette found a shipment of the special soap Kitty had thrown away and took an overdose, the drug ring was exposed. Kitty was arrested as an accomplice, and the fact that she was a bigamist was revealed.

Tara and Phil continued to hope for a future together. Chuck refused to continue his dialysis treatment when he learned that Tara was going to leave him. Erica refused to give Phil his freedom.

The problems of their children caused great stress for Ruth and Joe. They were torn between the love of their children and wanting to see them happy, and their love for each other.

Chuck gave Tara a divorce and married an ex-prostitute, Donna. Her streetwalker past soon cast a shadow over their marriage. Her pimp Billy Clide (one of the sleaziest men in PV’s history) secretly had her sterilized when she’d undergone an emergency appendectomy. But Donna didn’t know that when she married Chuck. Anxious to give him a child, she began fantasizing that she was pregnant.

Chuck wanted a child, too, because he had finally relinquished all rights to little Philip. Tara, who had married Philip and recently had a miscarriage which almost caused her death, resented Phil’s long working hours on the police force. Phil resented Chuck’s involvement in her life. Their marriage was not what they expected.

[Picture of Charles (Hugh Franklin) and Phoebe (Ruth Warrick) in 1974]

Ruth and Joe Martin made plans to adopt their longtime foster child, Tad, when Tad’s father, Ray Gardner, suddenly appeared on the scene to make trouble. He refused to give the Martin’s permission to adopt Tad, unless they paid an exorbitant amount of money.

Erica left her job at Nick Davis’ Chateau and became hostess at The Goal Post, a new restaurant in town owned by ex-football player, Tom Cudahy. Meanwhile, Nick hired reformed ex-convict Claudette Montgomery to pass out menus at his eatery. And while Erica started dating Tom, Nick became involved with Claudette. Erica was so jealous of Claudette, that she tried to plant marijuana in her purse to get her parole revoked. But the plan backfired, and it was Erica who got caught red handed by the PV police!

Dr. David Thornton and Dr. Kristina Karras were all set to tie the knot, when his ex-wife, Edna, suddenly came to town. It turned out that they were still legally married, due to an error, and she proceeded to present him with a daughter, Dottie, who he didn’t even know he had fathered. With Dottie suffering from epilepsy, and Edna taking a job as manicurist at a posh PV salon, it looked like trouble ahead.

Frank and Nancy Grant got divorced so that he could marry Caroline Murray, but before the wedding Frank and Nancy had a last fling and she ended up pregnant.

The hottest new duo on the scene were divorcee Ellen Sheperd and young music teacher, Mark Dalton. Aside from a slight age difference, the only obstacle in their path was Ellen’s grown gaughter Devon, who still hadn’t accepted her parents’ divorce and resented Mark’s presence in her mother’s life.

Erica and Nick entered into a torrid Love affair. Nick made it clear that he was not interested in marriage, but when Erica almost died of pneumonia, she made him promise to marry her. After her recovery, Nick went back on his word and left The Chateau for a job in Chicago. Trying to get over Nick, Erica had an affair with Tom Cudahy. Tom fell for her head over heels and proposed. She scheduled their marriage for the day Nick was to arrive back in PV on business!

When little Philip, who was then called Charlie, got into trouble with a schoolmate, Phil was very hard on him. As a policeman, he considered it his duty to turn Charlie in. Their arguments over disciplining Charlie led to a separation for Phil and Tara.

Donna’s car was struck by a train when it stalled at a crossing, and the accident caused amnesia. She didn’t remember that she was Chuck’s wife, but thought she was still one of Billy Clyde’s prostitutes.

[Picture of Ruth (Mary Fickett) and Joe Martin (Ray MacDonnell) in 1975]

Phoebe, up to her old tricks, after recovering from paralysis caused by an accident, stayed in a wheelchair to win Charles’ sympathy. Benny, her trusted chauffeur, revealed her secret. She also bribed Billy Clyde to take Donna back as a prostitute.

Kelly, Kitty’s twin sister, came to town with her manager, Eddie. She got a job singing at The Chateau, and Myrtle Fargate tried to get her involved with Linc.

Part 4

Frank Grant married Caroline, which left Nancy pregnant and alone. Carl, an ex-boyfriend of Nancy’s, flew to see her and was hurt in a plane crash. Before he died, they married to give her child a name. Nancy pretended it was Carl’s child. Frank suspected nothing, but Caroline learned the truth.

Phoebe’s niece, Brooke, and Ellen’s daughter, Devon, both fell in love with the same man, Dan. Devon felt she couldn’t compete with a more “experienced” Brooke, so she gained “experience” in a motel room with Wally, and became pregnant. Wally offered to marry her, but she refused. Mark and Ellen offered to adopt the baby.

Charlie finally learned that he was Phil’s son, not Chuck’s. This made Donna feel more secure, because she was jealous of her husband’s relationship with Tara. Donna discovered that she was pregnant and was ecstatic, but gave birth to a stillborn baby.

Devon was determined to give her baby up for adoption, but when her little girl Bonnie was born, she changed her mind. When she saw how much Wally loved the baby, she consented to marry him.

Benny married Edna, even though he was really in love with Estelle, who was married to Billy Clyde.

Kelly became hooked on pills. Eddie held power over her because he was her drug supplier. Myrtle tried to help Kelly break her habit, but failed. One night, Kelly freaked out at The Chateau. Later, Eddie was found dead, with Kelly’s fingerprints on the murder weapon.

Erica talked Tom into helping her open a disco, Erica’s. She also convinced him that she wanted a child just as much as he did, but secretly continued to take her birth control pills.

Ellen and Mark grew apart. He took up with Brooke. Ellen became involved with Paul, whose wife Anne was in a mental institution due to a nervous breakdown. Both Ellen and Paul felt guilty, knowing that Anne was in the institution.

Nina Cortlandt, daughter of wealthy Palmer Cortlandt, fell in love with Dr. Cliff Warner, but possessive Palmer and nurse Sybil Thorne both wanted to see them break up. Sybil wanted Cliff all to herself. Palmer paid Cliff’s ex-girlfreind to say that her child was Cliff’s. Nina, shocked by this news, broke up with him. But upon learning the truth, they reunited. In a last ditch effort to prevent Cliff and Nina’s marriage, Palmer convinced her that she was losing her sight, due to diabetes. Eventually, Nina discovered the truth and denounced her father. He shot himself, but recovered and promised to give her a lavish wedding. On their wedding day, Cliff found out that Sybil was pregnant with his child. Nina insisted that he marry Sybil.

Erica auditioned for the role of spokeswoman for Sensuelle Cosmetics, behind Tom’s back. When he discovered her deception, he was furious and divorced her. Erica got the job and threw herself into her new career with zest, and became captivated with Brandon Kingsley. Tom fell for Brooke and planned to marry her.

Billy Clyde tried to force Estelle back into prostitution. When she ran away, he tracked her down, raped her and took her to a cemetery wher he planned to bury her alive. Eventually, the police arrested Billy Clyde and rescued Estelle. She was set to marry Benny, but discovered she was carrying Billy’s baby.

Tom’s brother Sean had been having an affair with Devon, but ended it to persue Monique (who was actually Nina’s mother Daisy, who was presumed dead). Bored by Wally and dumped by Sean, Devon started drinking heavily.

Con man Langley Wallingford set out to separate Phoebe from her valuable jewelry and paintings. He charmed his way into her life, hoping to steal her blind. When he couldn’t do it, he made her believe he was in love with her and asked her to marry him. She did and he planned to steal from her at a more opportune time.

Anne recovered from her mental breakdown and returned to Paul, who had fallen in love with Ellen. But Ellen couldn’t bring herself to steal another woman’s husband, and broke up with him. Later, Mark proposed to her and she accepted. Unfortunately, Anne soon died. Following her death, public prosecuter Paul Martin found his bereavement cut short by a demanding legal case.

When Sybil Thorne was murdered, Paul’s office charged Dr. Cliff Warner with the shocking crime, since his guilt seemend obvious. As the father of Sybil’s illegitimate son, Bobby, Cliff certainly had good reason for wanting Sybil dead; he and his wife, Nina, could keep Bobby for themselves and remove Sybil from their lives forever.

Cliff, of course, was innocent. Another likely suspect was Palmer Cortlandt, who had been paying Sybil to undermine Cliff’s marriage. Also implicated was mysterious stranger Monique Jonville who, during the trial, was unmasked as Nina’s mother Daisy. But in the end, it was Sean Cudahy (Daisy’s lover and Palmer’s business protege) who’s actually murdered Sybil, for his own fiendish reasons.

Sean was sent to prison, leaving his brother Tom devastated. As a result, Tom became withdrawn and moody. The honeymoon was barely over when he began retreating form his wife, Brooke. Meanwhile, Tom’s ex-wife Erica had become engaged to Brandon Kingsley, though he still wasn’t divorced from his wife, Sarah. A mysterious fan named Kent Bogard pursued Erica all the way to New Orleans, sending her love letter and diamonds. It turned out, Kent was heir to Bogard International, Sensuelle’s biggest competitor.

Sleazy Opal Gardner and her teenage daughter Jenny, Tad’s mother and sister, showed up in PV. While Opal spent the day painting her toenails, she forced poor Jenny to work part time at Foxy’s in Center City. Jenny became involved with wealthy Greg Nelson, who definitely didn’t approve of where she worked. Jenny was humiliated when he found out, but his love was sincere enough to weather the storm.

Jenny ang Greg grew very close, but their love met opposion in the form of Greg’s mother. Mrs. Nelson felt Jenny wasn’t good enough for her son. Meanwhile, Greg’s neighbor, Liza Colby was insanely jealous of Jenny. She did eveything possible to break up their romance. She seemed to have succeeded when she threatened to tell the world that Jenny father, Ray Gardner, was a rapist! She blackmailed Jenny into leaving town.

Donna had married Palmer Cortlandt after breaking up with Chuck. During a second honeymoon in Switzerland, she and Palmer got separated in a snowstorm. Donna and ex-husband Chuck found refuge in a cave and in order to generate enough body heat to stay alive, got very, very close. Donna ended up pregnant after that night and hoped that Palmer was the father. But Palmer knew that he wasn’t since he had become sterile in a polo accident years before.

Benny Sago got hooked on gambling. He bet all of his family’s savings and when he lost that, he went on to steal money from his business to support his habit. Estelle left him, but that didn’t stop him. Finally, when he couldn’t repay a loan shark, he was beaten within an inch of his life. In the hospital, Benny vowed never to gamble gain. Benny and Estelle reconciled, but she was killed days later in a car accident.

Phoebe hired Opal to work as a maid. Opal wasted no time before she became cozy with the man in the house. Langley led Opal to believe that the money in the family was all his and that he would soon divorce Phoebe and marry her. When Opal discovered that Phoebe had all the money, she left Langley, but had become sufficiently friendly with Phoebe, so that Mrs. Wallingford agreed to finance a beauty salon for Opal, “The Glamorama”.

Before leaving PV, Jenny became very close to Jesse Hubbard, Frank Grant’s nephew, who had come to town following his mother’s death. Jesse was a street wise kid, and soon learned that Liza had blackmailed jenny. During an argument, Jesse pushed Liza and she claimed that he had tried to rape her. Jesse took off to join Jenny in New-York.

A young woman claiming to be Silver Kane, Erica’s half-sister, arrived at Erica’s doorstep. Erica had no reason to doubt Silver and let her move in.

When Erica discovered that her lover, Kent Bogard, was having an affair with Silver, she accidentally killed him. For this, she was sentenced to the electric chair, but was pardoned when Silver came forward and admitted to witnessing the accident, proved Erica’s innocence, and confessed that she wasn’t the real Silver kane, but an impostor.

Erica put all of this behind her and joined forces with Palmer, forming a new cosmetics company which they hoped would bring financial ruin to Lars Bogard, whom they both had a vendetta against. They discoverd that Lars was once a Nazi. He later died.

With such a colorful and eventful past, Erica decided it was time to write her autobiography and hired ghostwriter Mike Roy. They wrote the books, called “Raising Kane”, and had an affair. The movie rights were bought by affluent Adam Chandler.

Nina and Cliff broke up. Nina had an affair with handsome Steve Jacobi, but Cliff and Nina were meant to be together and she tried to reconcile with him. Meanwhile, he was hesitant. He had been seeing Devon. Devon became friendly with psychiatrist Lynn Carson. When Lynn told Devon that she was gay, Devon was taken aback, but gradually accepted her friend’s alternate lifestyle. Disillusioned with men, Devon eventually professed her love to Lynn, who gently explained, that while she was flattered, she knew Devon wasn’t gay.

Part 5

Mark developed a drug problem and accidentally caused Ellen to have a miscarriage. Ellen couldn’t cope with his drug addiction and they separated. Brooke and Tom worked out theirs problems.

[Pictures of: – Nancy (Lisa Wilkinson) and Frank (John Danelle) in 1978, – Erica (Susan Lucci) and Tom (Richard Shoberg) in 1978, – Brooke (Julia Barr) and Mark (Mark LaMura) in 1979.]

Tad Gardner returned to town, and managed to have an affair with wealthy Marion Colby and her daughter Liza. When Liza realized that her mother was the other woman in Tad’s life, she went on a bender.

Donna left Palmer when she learned that he had known all along that Chuck had fathered her child. When Chuck’s marriage dissolved, he and Donna decided to remarry, then their son died in a fire. Donna went nuts.

Jesse, having moved back to PV, eloped with young Angie Baxter, but their marriage was brief. Angie gave birth to their baby, Frankie, and put him up for adoption without consulting Jesse. When he found out, they reconciled and kidnapped their baby. Not realizing that the law was in their favor, they went on the lam.

Flamboyant Opal joined a video dating service, met and married Ralph Purdy, and left town with him. Meanwhile, pretty young Jenny had become a model. After Greg was paralyzed in an auto accident, his mother, Enid, convinced him to break up with Jenny, lest she take pity on him. Devastated, Jenny became engaged to a fellow model, Tony Barclay. When Greg recovered, he started dating Liza’s friend, Amanda Cousins. One day Amanda discovered a love letter to Greg from Jenny and gave it to him, despite Enid’s objections. Of course, this happened on Jenny and Tony’s wedding day. Realizing that Jenny still loved him, he raced to the church and saved her from a loveless marriage.

When Mike Roy realized that he wasn’t ready for marriage, he went to Tibet to write a book. Erica married Adam Chandler on the rebound. Mike and Erica’s love was too strong, and when he returned from Tibet, they resumed their affair behind Adam’s back.

Joanna, Adam’s trusted assistant, suspected somthing funny was going on between Erica and Mike, but Adam’s obsession with Erica made him refuse to consider the possibility and he fired Joanna. Bent on revenge, Joanna threatened to expose a diary which revealed that Adam tried to kill his former wife. Adam staged his own death to retrieve the diary and Erica and Mike, believing Adam was dead, got married! Upon his return to the land of the living, Adam was furious to learn about Erica’s marriage. He gave Erica an ultimatum: Mike or wealth and power. When she chose to stay with MIke, Adam vowed to ruin her.

Angie and Jesse returned to town with Frankie and began their life as a family. After a couple of unsuccessful business ventures, Jesse finally met singer Yvonne Caldwell and embarked on what looked like a promising career, managing Yvonne. Unfortunately, Yvonne and Jesse became lovers, which ruined his relationship with Angie. She kicked him out. But after a long separation, he proved that he really loved her and she took him back.

Meanwhile, Jenny and Greg enjoyed a blissfully happy marriage, until Tony decided to kill Greg. While the loving couple spent time at a lake, Tony rigged a jet ski to blow up, figuring Greg would be the one to ride it. Unfortunately, Jenny decided to ride it first, and died in the explosion. Greg was devastated. Not long after, people started telling Greg that Jenny might still be alive. He had seen Jenny die with his own two eyes, and had no idea what was going on. it turned out that Olga Svensen, the woman who owned the modeling agency Jenny had worked for, had hired Sheila Thomas, a Jenny look-alike, to impersonate Jenny for publicity purposes. Confused, Greg fell for Sheila.

When Tom’s old college buddy Gil Barrett came to town, Brooke claimed that he was the masked attacker who had tried to rape her. Tom refused to believe her. Angry and frustrated, Brooke divorced him.

Ross Chandler arrived in town, believing he was Adam’s son. Palmer discovered that he was actually Ross’ father. Palmer, having recently been wiped out financially, didn’t put up too much resistance when Adam asked him not to tell Ross in exchange for information leading to the return of his fortune. Ross eventually learned the truth and bitterly rejected Palmer. Palmer found Ross’ ex-wife Cynthia Preston and invited her and her son, Andrew, whom he believed to be his grandson, to come live with him. It turned out that Andrew wasn’t Ross’ son, but Chase Preston’s son.

When Phoebe forgave Langley for all of his deceptions, she invited his daughter, Hillary Wilson, to come live with them. Hillary’s mother had recently died. When Tad Martin met Hillary, it was love at first sight, and he gave up his womanizing days, but not for long. After a fight with Hillary, Tad turned to Dottie Thornton for comfort and got her pregnant. Hillary found out and urged him to marry Dottie. When Dottie miscarried, he planned on divorcing her and pursuing Hillary whom he still loved.

[Picture of Nina (Taylor Miller), Cliff (Peter Bergman) and Palmer (James Mitchell) in 1980]

Mark, having cleaned up his act, posed as a drug runner, to help catch the real drug lords. Brooke learned of a buy that was going to take place and hid out to get evidence. She broke the story and had to testify in court. When she realized that the judge hearing the case was actually the big wheel behind the drug ring, she refused to reveal Mark as her source. Judge Martell sent her to jail, where he planted one of his people to try to get information out of her. When she escaped, he captured her. Mark tried to save her and the judge held them both captive, while trying to make them dependent on drugs. Mike realized what was going on and helped them escape. Unfortunately, he was shot dead.

A grief-stricken Erica went to Tibet for confort, because Mike had loved it there so much. She found solace and strength there, when Mike’s spirit appeared to her and showed her that she had to go on with her life. One of the monks, Jeremy Hunter, had secretly been sent to PV to look after her. They fell in love. When Jeremy couldn’t take it any longer, he returned to Tibet, to be relieved of his vows of celibacy.

Tad finally won Hillary back. At last she admitted that she still loved him. Then they found out that their friend Bob Georgia, who was in love with Hillary, had a fatal blood disease. Hillary married him out of pity.

[Picture of Jenny (Kim Delaney) and Greg (Laurence Lau) in 1982]

Cliff’s sister, Linda, showed up with her boyfriend Zach Grayson. Zach came up with a scheme to extort money from Nina. The plan worked for a while as they convinced Nina that she was investing in a faith healing project. Zach was sleazy as could be. He killed Linda, then ended up dead himself. All evidence pointed to Daisy Cortlandt, since she was found over the body with the murder weapon in her hand. Zach had been blackmailing most of PV and had a lot of enemies. Daisy was convicted, but it was later uncovered that Marion Colby was the murderess. She was sent to prison.

Angie studied to become a doctor. Her problems started when Dr. Voight sexually harassed her, then threatened to ruin her career if she said anything. Thanks to Jesse, all ended well. Angie continued her studies.

French daredevil Gilles St. Claire came to town and fell in love with Brooke. They had a brief affair, before he was killed by the jealous husband of a former lover.

As Erica and Jeremy grew closer and closer, his former love Natalie arrived in town carrying her dead husband’s child. That husband just happened to be Jeremy’s father! She still loved Jeremy and would stop at nothing to have him. Getting Jeremy drunk, she lured him to bed and later claimed the baby she was carrying was his. Jeremy decided to care for Natalie and the baby. Erica, frustrated and alone, turned to former husband Tom for comfort.

Bob left town and Tad and Hillary were finally married. Robin, an ex-girlfriend of Tad’s, came to town and started stirring up trouble. Her brother, Wade, recently released from prison, followed, befriended Phoebe, and conned her into making him her public relations director. He proceeded to break Langley and Phoebe up and then comfort her. They were married, (even though he was years her junior), and planned to have her write him into her will and then bump her off. It almost worked, too. He was captured in the nick of time and sent to jail. Hillary found out that Tad knew about Wade all along and left him. Robin and Greg fell in love.

Meanwhile, Skye Patterson showed up in town. It was soon discovered that she was Adam’s daughter. She became friendly with Hillary and seduced Tad.

Erica proved that Jeremy was not the father of Timothy, Natalie’s son. Jeremy left Natalie. Natalie, desperate for money, accepted a job with Adam. The job entailed doing a little corporate spying on Palmer. Natalie became Palmer’s nurse while he was confined to a wheelchair. Palmer and Natalie soon fell in love.

Tad and Hillary split up for the last time, as did Robin and Greg. Tad and Greg both left town. Hillary started seeing Donna’s brother, Mitch Beck, who was also involved with Skye.

Part 6

Ellen and Ross, who were finally happily married, decided to adopt a child. They figured they’d adopt a baby, but got to know 16 year- old Julie. They liked her a lot and decided to adopt her instead.

Teenage Charlie Brent returned to PV and moved in with Joe and Ruth Martin. Charlie and Julie became friends and then found themselves very attracted to each other and started going steady. Meanwhile, Langley and Phoebe took in Phoebe’s niece Cecily, who also had eyes for Charlie.

Natalie and Ross began a torrid affair. Ross felt neglected, because Ellen was spending most of her time with Mark, who was recovering from a terrible cocaine habit. Natalie felt bad about the affair and was very attracted to Palmer, so she agreed to marry him.

Erica realized that Jeremy wasn’t the man for her and fell for Travis Montgomery. Jeremy found himself attracted to an amnesia victim, whose life he saved. It finally came out that the woman in question was the real Silver Kane.

[Picture of Angie (Debbie Morgan) and Jesse (Darnell Williams) in 1984]

Yvonne returned to town in order to get Jesse’s help. Her baby had been stolen. Jesse, who had become a police officer, busted up the black market baby ring and found out that Angie’s father, Les, was at the head of it. In a shoot out, Jesse killed him. Angie couldn’t accepted the fact that Jesse killed her father and they split up. But they couldn’t stay apart for long.

Palmer became suspicious of Natalie and Ross and asked him to move out. Ross lost his job at Cortlandt Electronics and blamed Natalie. He sought her company, but she made it clear that it was over between them. Ross, unable to accept that, raped her. He was imprisoned and went through therapy. Mitch and Hillary wed and left town.

Erica married Travis and they had a baby named Bianca. Silver and Jeremy broke up and Jeremy found himself attracted to Natalie, again. A jealous Silver tried to shoot Natalie [[actually, she came at her with a pair of scissors and the gun was Nat’s, if I remember correctly]], but in self-defense, Natalie killed Silver. Palmer found out about it and told Natalie he would dispose of the body and that she wouldn’t tell anyone what really happened. Everyone would just think that Silver left town. Confused, Natalie listened to him and let him take care of everything.

Stuart, Adam’s identical twin brother, fell in love with Cindy Parker, a young woman dying of AIDS. The two eventually married and Stuart adopted her young son, Scott.

Cliff, who had been doing some medical work in South America, was in a plane crash and presumed dead. Unable to accept this, Nina went to South America with Matt, a friend of Jeremy’s, who was a mercenary and familiar with South America. They were unable to find anything out and returned to PV. Nina and Matt fell in love and married. Shortly after that, Cliff showed up. Nina was shocked by his return and they fell into each other’s arms. When she found out she was pregnant, she decided to stay with Matt and they left town.

Everyone found out that Mark was really Julie’s father and her mother was a prostitute. Unable to handle this, Julie ran away from home. She wound up involved with no-good Creed Kelly. Creed’s nephew, Nico, and Ross saved her. Creed died in a plane crash. Julie returned to PV and became engaged to Charlie, but she was very attracted to Nico.

A group that feared AIDS set Cindy’s house on fire. Skye was involved because she was afraid for her uncle, Stuart. At the last moment, she saved Cindy, but was caught in the fire herself, and wound up in a coma. She had been involved with Tom, but by the time she came out of the coma, Tom had fallen in love with Barbara Montgomery, Travis’ ex-wife. Skye realized this and pretended to be paralyzed to keep Tom around.

Jesse was assigned to tail a man named John Remington, an under-world figure. During a meeting with Remington, Jesse was shot and killed. Angie was assigned to be Remington’s doctor. He was also injured in the shooting. She found herself very attracted to the man she considered responsible for her husband’s death.

[Picture of Erica (Susan Lucci) and Adam (David Canary) in 1986]

Palmer’s young cousins [[niece and nephew?]], Dixie and Will, arrived in PV. They started working for Palmer, but eventally, Will got a job working at Nico’s new club and Dixie started working as a personal assistant to Brooke and Adam, who had gotten married.

Will and Dixie found Silver’s body while they were swimming in the pond. It was discovered that Natalie had killed Silver in self-defense, and Palmer went to jail for obstruction of justice. Natalie divorced Palmer and got back together with Jeremy.

Sean Cudahy returned to town, sleazy as ever, and seduced Cecily. Cecily fell for every line he handed her and planned to marry him. Bitsy, Cecily’s mother, convinced that Sean was a gold digger, confirmed her suspicions and proved it to Cecily, who left Sean at the altar.

Skye tried many times to kill Barbara and finally pulled a gun on her. They struggled and Barbara was saved. Skye was found to be emotionally unstable and was sent to an institution.

Bianca was kidnapped by a business associate of Travis’, named Steven Andrews. When Erica got the baby back and found out that Travis was tangled up in the plot, she left him, taking Bianca to the country. While she was away, she fell for Andrews [[…without knowing who he really was, I might add]]. Travis tracked her down and she told him she wanted a divorce, so she could marry Andrews. Travis and Andrews fought, and Andrews was killed. Travis staggered off, was mugged and got amnesia. He was admitted to Oak Haven.

Palmer was taken to a work camp, where he had a massive heart attack. He was released from the camp and made to finish his sentence at Cortlandt Manor. Ellen and Mark got together and left for Hong-Kong. Natalie and Jeremy got married.

Creed Kelly turned out to be alive, after all. It was discovered that John Remington wasn’t really a gangster, but worked for the government and had been looking for Creed, who was responsible for Jesse’s death. Tad, who had returned to town and had become a private investigator, joined Remington in his quest to find Creed. They tracked him down and killed him for real.

Angie found herself attracted to both Remington and Cliff Warner. Cliff had been helping her deal with Cindy’s situation. Cindy died of AIDS, and her twin sister Karen moved to PV.

Brooke and Adam decided that they would like to have a baby, but found out that Brooke wasn’t able to conceive. Adam suggested a surrogate mother, but Brooke wanted to adopt. Meanwhile, while Barbara was babysitting Laura, Brooke and Tom’s daughter, Laura was hit by a drunk driver and killed. Tom, unable to accept this, split up with Barbara. Barbara turned to pills. Tad was sympathetic.

Travis regained his memory. He found himself attracted to Skye who he had met at Oak Haven. Erica started seeing Travis’ brother, Jackson.

Dixie told Adam that she was willing to carry his child. The two made love and she became pregnant. [[Now, here I don’t agree at all: Dixie “comforted” Adam after a fight with Brooke, then found out that she was pregnant. She didn’t go up to Adam and say: “I feel an ovulation coming on, let me be a surrogate mother for your child”!! ]] Brooke and Adam decided to adopt Dixie’s child although Brooke didn’t know Adam was really the baby’s father.

Jeremy’s ex-lover, Marissa, arrived in PV with her son David Rampal. She told Jeremy that David was his son. Palmer disccovered his lost niece, Melanie, who was Will and Dixie’s sister. She moved in with him and fell for David. Palmer was upset, because he didn’t want any of his relatives involved with the Hunter family.

Part 7

Charlie and Julie were married, then divorced and Julie married Nico. She got pregnant, but had a miscarriage. They discovered their marriage wasn’t legal. She and Nico started fighting when Julie decided to take an internship in Washington. Will started falling for Julie. Nico told Julie it was over.

Erica and Jackson were in a plane crash, in New Mexico. They survived, but their plane exploded. They saved each other’s lives. Travis searched for them. He finally found them, together in a sleeping bag. He punched his brother, telling Erica that the only reason Jack wanted her was to steal her from Travis.

Private eye Tad moved in with Barbara Montgomery because he was concerned that someone was stalking her. Cliff and Angie fell in love, which caused problems for young Frankie, who didn’t want his mom to be involved in an interracial affair. Palmer, intent on ruining Melanie and David’s relationship, plotted to bring David’s ex-girlfriend, Ashley, to town.

Brooke hired Tad to find out who the father of Dixie’s baby was. Tad easily befriended Dixie, but when she realized he was working for Brooke, she stopped trusting him.

Ashley told Melanie that David had gotten her pregnant, then talked her into having an abortion, and dumped her. Melanie believed her and told David that she didn’t want anything more to do with him.

Nico’s club was destroyed. Cecily offered to marry him, so she could receive her trust fund.

Tad learned that Adam was the father of Dixie’s baby. He told Brooke that he couldn’t work for her anymore. Brooke had her suspicions that Adam might be the father. Then Palmer learned that Adam was the father. Tad warned Dixie that Adam wasn’t trustworthy. In order to avoid problems, Tad announced that he was the father of Dixie’s baby. Adam accused Tad of lying, but couldn’t provide proof. Dixie agreed that Tad was the father.

When Marissa was supposed to return to Pine Valley, David and Jeremy went to meet her. Melanie showed up too. David and Melanie weren’t supposed to be there. Something went wrong and David and Melanie had to run away. Marissa and Jeremy were captured by thugs and kidnapped.

Dixie informed Adam that he had to choose between Brooke and her. Adam chose Dixie, so that she wouldn’t go away while she was carrying his child. Brooke overheard and was devastated.

[Picture of Dixie (Cady McClain) and Adam (David Canary) in 1988.]

Nico refused to marry Cecily just for money, but she convinced him that if he didn’t marry her, she would just marry somebody else. He agreed and they got married, figuring they would stay together a little while, get the money and divorce. Then she learned that she wouldn’t get her inheritance for six months. This caused problems because they were just pretending to be in love. They didn’t sleep together, but had to live together for six months.

Love was in the air: Cliff asked Angie to marry him and she accepted. Travis and Barbara started dating, which made Erica jealous. Tad fell in love with Dixie. And although Cecily and Nico refused to admit it, they really were attracted to each other.

Adam conned Dixie into marrying him, yet on his wedding night, Adam was still professing his love to Brooke! Brooke was absolutely disgusted with him and sued him for half of his property.

Palmer plotted to break up two happy couples. He and Marissa planned to break up Natalie and Jeremy so that Marissa could have Jeremy for herself. Through many manipulations, they made Natalie look jealous and rotten, so Jeremy left her. Then, Palmer put Melanie on a plane to Paris, to study music and keep her away from David. But Melanie got off the plane and returned home.

Tad convinced Dixie that Adam didn’t love her. Adam had Tad beaten to a pulp; Dixie and Cecily found him and brought him to the hospital. Although, Adam denied having anything to do with Tad’s fight, Dixie stayed with Tad. She finally gave birth to Adam Jr, the son Adam always wanted. On the day the baby was born, Tad declared his love for her.

Travis asked Barbara to move in with him, but when he started to have terrible headaches that kept getting worse and worse, he knew that something was wrong and told Barbara that he wasn’t ready to live with her. It turned out that Travis had a brain tumor. He didn’t tell anyone about it, he just said he had to go away for a little while and left town. Of course, he really went into the hospital. Meanwhile, Barbara found out she was pregnant.

[Picture of Stuart (David Canary) and Cindy (Ellen Wheeler) in 1988.]

David proposed to Melanie and she was thrilled, Erica and Jackson made love in Paris, while Cliff and Angie set their wedding date.

Adam Jr. was kidnapped. Adam and Dixie asked Tad to find him. All the clues led to Skye, but Tad really couldn’t believe that Skye would kidnap her own half-brother. In the end, Tad figured out that Karen was actually the kidnapper.

Jeremy finally found out that Marissa was evil, but it was too late. Marissa kidnapped Natalie and threatened to shoot her. Jeremy found them and fought with Marissa for the gun. It went off and Marissa was killed.

Nina returned to Pine Valley with her son, who was very ill. The boy needed a blood transfusion. When Cliff found out that Matt, Nina’s husband didn’t have the same blood as the child and that he did, he realized that he was the boy’s father.

Adam devised a plan to make Dixie believe she was going crazy. He would move things around and tell her he hadn’t touched them. Once he even moved the baby, which really drove her crazy. Beginning to feel out of control, Dixie admitted herself to a mental institution. Finally, Tad realized that Dixie had been Adam’s victim and that she wasn’t really crazy. He, Nico and Cecily rescued her. Adam tried to stop them and Tad beat him up. Dixie was declared legally sane, but Tad had to go to jail, because Adam pressed charges.

Shortly after helping Tad get Dixie out of the intsitution, Nico and Cecily were happily married. Cecily then won the Miss USA Homemaker contest and went on a world tour. [Ed. note: I thought it was the Mrs. USA Homemaker contest.] At the same time, ________ [Ed. note: they left out the character’s name, and I don’t remember this storyline.] had an international modeling assignment, and he left Pine Valley also.

Jeremy begged Natalie not to divorce him, but she told him that she just didn’t love him anymore. Erica found her long lost, supposedly dead father. Melanie broke her engagement when David wouldn’t let her comfort him after his mother’s death. Angie broke her engagement, too, because she could tell that Cliff was still in love with Nina. Tom and Barbara got back together, and eventually got married. David and Emily Ann became good friends. Cliff and Nina remarried. Skye developed a drinking problem and Opal Gardner returned to town.

While Dixie was in the mental institution, Adam was awarded full custody of Adam Jr. He promised Dixie generous visiting privileges if she agreed to go get a quickie divorce, she did. When she returned, Tad proposed.

Barbara gave birth to a beautiful little girl, whom she named Molly. Travis returned to Pine Valley after recovering from his brain tumor, and demanded to know if the baby was his. Tom and Barbara agreed that the baby was Tom’s.

Adam lost everything, because Palmer outsmarted him in a business deal. Brooke insisted that Adam give Dixie custody of the baby. Adam was defeated. The only thing he really wanted was to win Brooke back. He actually almost succeeded, but when Dixie informed her how Adam had convinced her she was crazy, Brooke was sick. Adam claimed he was going to tell her all about that himself. She didn’t believe him and dumped him. Adam had a massive stroke.

Dr. Chuck Tyler returned to Pine Valley, and fell in love with Donna once again. Donna was thrilled to have him back in her life.

[Picture of Erica (Susan Lucci) and Jackson (Walt Willey) in 1989.]

Sleazy Billy Clyde Tuggle returned to town, which frightened Donna to no end. He found out that he was Emily Ann’s father, and decided that he wanted to get to know his daughter better. Donna was scared to death that Emily Ann would find out about her roots. Benny Sago came to help her out. When Chuck asked her to marry him, she couldn’t say yes and couldn’t tell him why. She had bribed Billy with money borrowed from Phoebe, to go away. Billy took the money, but he didn’t leave town. Phoebe gave her the money on the condition that she wouldn’t marry Chuck. In the end, Chuck found out and married Donna anyway, and Emily Ann found out that her boss, Mr. Rockefeller, was actually her father, Billy Clyde. In a moment of need, Emily married Joey Martin.

Travis tried to reconcile with Erica, but she was involved with his brother Jack. For Bianca’s sake, she tried to get back together with Travis. Eventually the brothers made her make a choice. They each proposed, and even though she was terribly attracted to Jackson, she married Travis. Around the same time, Tom and Barbara learned that little Molly needed a bone marrow transplant. At this point, Travis was told that he was Molly’s father, hoping that he would have compatible marrow. Unfortunately, he didn’t. Erica was devastated by the news that he was Molly’s father. When no donor was found, Travis and Barbara decided to try and have another baby, with the same hopes that it would have the same bone marrow. They had a one night stand.

Meanwhile Erica continued her affair with Jackson, until Ceara Connor entered the picture. Jackson was very interested in Myrtle’s niece. Ceara was interested in catching a rich husband. When Ceara found out that David Rampal was rich and interested in her, she decided that he was worth getting to know. Jeremy didn’t trust her and tried to break them up, but as he plotted to end their relationship, Jeremy began to fall for Ceara.

Opal Gardner plotted with Palmer to break Tad and Dixie up. When Tad and Dixie discovered what they were up to, they wanted nothing more to do with them. Although Tad and Dixie tried to make their marriage work, Opal and Palmer’s manipulations took their toll, and Tad and Dixie divorced. Tad soon found himself involved with Brooke. When Billy Clyde kidnapped Dixie, Tad realized that he still loved her. While trying to save Dixie, Billy Clyde and Tad went off a bridge. Billy Clyde died, and Tad ended up with amnesia. He thumbed a ride out of town, with no idea who he was. Everyone believed he was dead.

Opal began a relationship with Mr. U, Palmer’s right hand man. They planned to marry. When Daisy returned to town, Palmer tried to get her back, but she didn’t want him. She suggested that he get together with Opal. At first, Palmer didn’t think Opal was good enough for him, but he soon realized that he had deep feelings for her, and they were married.

Barbara was thrilled when Molly went into remission. Erica and Jackson continued their affair even after Travis found out about it. Tom and Erica were appalled by the fact that Barbara and Travis had slept together. Tom left Barbara. Travis and Erica divorced and he got custody of Bianca. Those two, along with first wife Barbara and daughter-by-her Molly, moved to Seattle.

After learning that Ceara didn’t want to marry him, much less have anything to do with him, David got into a terrible accident. Both Jeremy and Ceara felt very guilty.

Brooke learned she was pregnant with Tad’s baby. When Dixie asked her if the baby was Tad’s, she said no, to spare Dixie’s feelings.

Adam and Natalie married, and together they formed an unholy alliance to get back at Palmer. Adam then tried to swindle Natalie, and it was all-out war. Trevor came to her rescue and they fell in love. Adam refused to give her a divorce.

It was discovered that somebody was poisoning Palmer. Will suspected Opal, and made that perfectly clear. It turned out that Mr. U was the one doing the poisoning, because Opal had ditched him for Palmer. Although Opal wasn’t responsible, the whole incident caused Palmer and Opal to doubt each other, and ended with their separation.

A love-struck Mr. U kidnapped Opal, but during the flight to evade undercover police, he donned a parachute and jumped out of the plane and out of Pine Valley for good.

Charlie Brent returned to town. Skye left, leaving Will very unhappy. Both Cal and Derek asked for Angie’s hand in marriage. Charlie talked Erica into going out on a date with him.

In an effort to get Adam together with Brooke, Trevor led him to believe that the baby Brooke was carrying could be his. Adam fell for it and went to the artificial insemination clinic that Brooke said she used, and found false evidence that he was the father. Meanwhile, Tom had agreed to pretend to be the baby’s father, and Brooke agreed to marry him. Adam didn’t believe that Tom and Brooke really loved each other and he proposed to her, but she refused.

Erica lost custody of Bianca because of her affair with Jack. Because of that, she wanted nothing to do with him.

Once Emily Ann and Joey were married, she became obsessed with having a child. She convinced herself she was pregnant when in fact she wasn’t. Meanwhile, Joey was becoming attracted to Katie Kennicott, who responded in kind.

[Picture of Tad (Michael E. Knight) and Dixie (Cady McClain) in 1989.]

A drunken Arlene caused a car crash that almost resulted in Brooke losing Tad’s baby. She had an emergency caesarean section at the hospital and named the baby Jamie. Hayley, Arlene’s daughter, took the rap for Arlene. Brian, Hayley’s boyfriend, knew what she was doing.

Angie was proposed to by both Cal and Derek and had to choose. She accepted Derek’s proposal but then accidentally called him Jesse.

Part 8

David Rampal dated Katie, which made Joey extremely jealous. Meanwhile, Emily Ann took a job at a daycare center, to be around children. She threw away Joey’s condoms and it caused a fight. That sent him to Katie’s. Emily was fired from the daycare center for taking a baby without notifying the staff.

Opal and Palmer finally got back together after the poisoning incident with Mr. U, thanks to Palmer’s ex-wife, Daisy.

Trevor suggested to Nat that she visit her sister Janet, but Nat didn’t want to, claiming that they never really got along. Instead, Janet arrived for a visit, and developed a crush on Trevor. Janet completely transformed herself to look like Nat, and made plans to seduce Trevor while Nat was away with Timmy.

Emily still wouldn’t believe that she wasn’t pregnant and left Joey because he wouldn’t believe her. They got back together but then Emily overheard Joey tell Katie that he loved her. Emily fell down the stairs and vowed revenge on Katie. Later, she slipped a stolen poison into Katie’s drink and stashed her into a closet in her house. [ed. note – i thought it was the bathroom, not a closet.] Joey realized she had stolen the drug and raced home. Emily pulled a knife on him and eventually surrendered when Joey said she was acting like Billy Clyde, her dead father. Emily was committed to a sanitarium.

Livia’s son, Terrence, fell in love instantly when he spotten An Li in the park. Her mother was the Cortlandts’ new chef. He asked her out but she made excuses; she really had an overprotective mother.

Dixie witnessed a shooting in a convenience store. The killer chased her to the Glamorama, where she was saved by stranger, Craig Lawson. Opal and Dixie persuaded him to stay in Pine Valley. Palmer gave Craig a job at Cortlandt Electronics, which enraged Will.

Ceara was troubled by memory flashbacks that included her father, George Connor. Jeremy fell in love with her during his scheme to break her up with his son, David. George came to Pine Valley and Ceara became more withdrawn. Ceara remembered that she was sexually abused by her father as a child. Ceara shot her father dead during a confrontation.

[picture: 1991 – Troubled teens Brian and Hayley’s (Matt Borlenghi & Kelly Ripa) tale of teenage angst brought the growing teen scene to Pine Valley prominence.]

A homeless man found Natalie in the well where she was being kept captive by Janet. He pawned her pearls for booze, but later went to tell the police but was arrested himself. Dimitri Marick found Nat in the well and took her to his home, Wildwind. Janet, still masquerading as Nat, married Trevor and they made love.

Janet also held Hayley hostage. She shot and wounded Brian during a rescue attempt. Janet finally gave up and was arrested.

Jack proposed to Brooke, but she needed time to think. Erica rescinded her decision to marry Charlie, so he and Joey left Pine Valley. Jeremy and Ceara also planned to tie the knot. As Derek and Mimi were making love, Bernicker caught them and Mimi was fired.

Natalie was torn between her love for Trevor and her gratitude for Dimitri. She sold her house back to Adam and let Trevor and Hayley continue living there.

Dr. Steve Hamill was attracted to Dixie. Gloria was introduced to Craig by Opal, but they knew each other from before. They were lovers in California. He admitted he was using Dixie for her money.

Janet was found guilty at her trial and announced she was pregnant with Trevor’s child. Natalie was beside herself.

To prove his love for Hayley, Brian proposed marriage. Hayley accepted, but later changed her mind. Brian was upset and sought out An Li. Then, as Hayley was kissing Will, Brian walked in.

[picture of Trevor and Nat on the island: 1991 – Fans breathed a collective sigh of relief when Trevor (James Kiberd) finally found love with his doll, Natalie (Kate Collins). The relationship went through many ups and downs before the two eventually married.]

Ceara and Jeremy married. Nat admitted she loved both Dimitri and Trevor. Trevor said he had no choice but to raise Janet’s baby. Natalie accepted Dimitri’s proposal.

Two white men viciously beat up Terrence at Tom’s health club. Tom found him and rushed him to the hospital. Derek arrested the guys.

An Li told her mom she wouldn’t marry her arranged fiancee [sic], she loved Brian. Adam suggested she marry Brian to stay in the country. Brian and An Li eloped and Hayley was devastated. When he found out they’d have to stay married for three years to make her citizenship legal, he realized he’d made a mistake. Hayley started dating rapist Will on the rebound.

Gloria confessed to Craig that Will raped her. Will married a drunken Hayley for her trust fund. Will was arrested for Gloria’s rape and Hayley stood by him. An Li and Brian moved in together.

At the jail, Brian tried to strangle Will, but was pulled away. He kissed Hayley, but smelled liquor on her breath. Erica gave Hayley Will’s bail money. Brian told An Li he didn’t love her. Will was released from jail.

WILL IS KILLED

Will was smashed with a crowbar and killed. Brian was found standing over Will’s body by Adam. Hayley was unconscious in the other room and Brian had put his prints on the weapon to protect Hayley. Will was dead and everyone had an alibi.

Janet was having a difficult pregnancy, so she was moved from prison to Pine Valley Hospital. Trevor, concerned about his unborn child, visited Janet as much as she [sic] could, but he couldn’t take all her mind games. Ceara agreed to visit Janet to take some of the pressure off Trevor.

As Will’s murder investigation came to a feverish pitch, it appeared Craig was guilty. The videotape of Gloria and him making love was shown in court in front of a horrified Dixie. She realized her brother was right all along and that both her husband and best friend had been deceiving her.

[Picture: 1992 Dr. Stephen Hamill (Andrew Jackson) was quite angry with Gloria (Teresa Blake) for deceiving Dixie. She was in love with Dixie’s husband Craig.]

While visiting Janet at the hospital, Ceara pieced together certain clues and realized that Janet killed Will! Before she could tell anyone, Ceara was knocked over the head by Janet and left for dead.

Natalie was kidnapped by a now very pregnant Janet and taken to a secluded area in the woods. In an attempt to escape, Natalie was shot in the leg. Janet took her to a deserted cabin, where she proceeded to go into labor. Trevor arrived just in time to witness the birth of his baby daughter, as well as arrest Janet for the murder.

Brooke quickly fell for Edmund Grey, a journalist who was writing about Will’s murder case. They enjoyed a passionate affair, but problems arose when Booke became aware of his obsession with the Marick family. It was later revealed that Dimitri, Angelique and Edmund grew up together on the Marick estate. Edmund was raised by an abusive man who worked as a gardener for the powerful family.

Dixie, devastated by Will’s death and Craig’s lies, found herself falling into a deep depression. She went to a seedy bar to pick up men and then brought them back to Will’s old apartment. One of these men tried to rape her, but Brian broke in just in time and threw the guy out. Dixie and Brian stayed up all night talking about their problems and grew close.

When Angelique recovered, Dimitri and Erica couldn’t fight their attraction to each other any longer and began a torrid affair. Helga became worried that Angelique would be forced to leave Wildwind, so she decided to make known a very well-kept secret: Edmund was really Hugo Marick’s son and rightful heir to Wildwind! However, when Dimitri informed Helga he intended to stay with Angelique, she destroyed the evidence, but not before Edmund saw it.

Natalie and Trevor were happily wed with everyone in attendance, including Harold the dog. Natalie was able to accept Trevor and Janet’s baby as her own, so the happy couple named her Amanda Maureen and looked forward to their lives together.

Ceara received a wonderful job offer in London, but didn’t want to leave Jeremy. He convinced her to take the job and he would visit her as often as possible. He later moved out of Pine Valley.

NATALIE BLINDED IN FIRE!

Galen began getting threatening phone calls from her ex-husband, Carter, who had just been released from jail. He had physically beaten her all the years they were married and she feared for her life. She sought help from Trevor, who she once had a crush on. Trevor leaned very heavily on Carter, who sought revenge by burning Trevor’s house down. Natalie was caught in the fire and as a result, became blind. Carter felt extremely guilty about this and visited Natalie in the hospital under an assumed identity. He soon found himself in love with her. He kidnapped her to a houseboat, where he planned for them to start their lives together. Natalie, now realizing it was Carter, fought to free herself. Trevor eventually arrived and rescued Natalie, but Carter made his escape. He was later found and brought to justice, but not before he agreed to seek professional help.

Tom and Livia were joyously married. Although they knew that some of the town was against their interracial union, they were in love, and that would see them through anything.

Erica went on a business trip to Budapest in hopes of forgetting Dimitri. However, after he came clean with Angelique about his affair, Dimitri followed Ms. Kane and they planned to get married. Edmund kidnapped Erica and convinced her of all the horrible things Dimitri had done, including still being involved with his wife. Edmund and Erica teamed up to get Dimitri, but Helga, believing Erica to be the cause of all Angelique’s problems, grabbed her and left her in a crypt to die. Dimitri and Edmund chased after Helga, who admitted that Edmund really was Hugo’s son. She then slipped from the high wall where she was standing and was killed. Erica was rescued, but remained in a catatonic state.

Upon arriving back in Pine Valley, Dimitri did some business with the Orsini family, who owned vineyards in California. The mother and son combo of Nola and Ted Orsini were no ordinary duo, though. Ted was really the long-lost Tad Martin, who was suffering from amnesia. But, when Nola died, Tad returned to California with her remains to see to her proper burial.

[picture: 1993 Edmund and Brooke (John Callahan and Julia Barr) thought they had found happiness, but when Brooke revealed Tad was the father of her son Jamie, Edmund had a hard time facing up to this new situation.]

TAD RETURNS!

Brooke, knowing that Ted was really Tad, also attended the funeral. After the ceremony, she confronted Tad and attempted to fill in the blanks in his recent past. Meanwhile, Dixie was depressed with the prospect of Adam getting custody of Adam Jr. She and Brian defied the court order and absconded with Adam Jr., not realizing that Adam had decided *not* to pursue custody. He was in love with Gloria.

Tad returned to Pine Valley and everyone welcomed him back. He still had vague memories of Dixie and was determined to track her down. A distressed Stuart found out about Gloria and Adam’s affair and put an end to their engagement.

Erica decided she truly loved Dimitri and enlisted Edmund’s help in winning him back.
